After the die was altered from MATHEW (No. 40) to MATTHEW a few impressions
were taken in white-metal before the dies were hardened. In hardening, flaws
were formed in both dies. A specimen in copper, edge plain (in collar), shows
the flaws on the obverse extending across the design.
