Comments about this token

Free Grammar School has a rather long history, being endowed in 1552 by king Edward VI. The building pictured was erected in 1707 and demolished in 1832. It was located at the New Street, probably near place now occupied by the New Street station (between Temple Street and High Street). W.Hutton writes "Several houses in New Street and Peck Lane were purchased, and removed for the site of the present building, which now occupies the whole space, fronting New Street, from the Hen and Chickens to Peck Lane" when describing Gothic building of 1836.

The school exist today as King Edward's school. See also: New Street, Birmingham.
